Introduction

Did you know Spain is a kingdom, but the King doesn't hold political power? Let's discover how that works!

Contemporary Spain is a fascinating country with a rich history that shapes its modern identity. Since the end of Franco's dictatorship in 1975 and the establishment of a democracy, Spain has become a key player in Europe. This lesson will explore its political system, vibrant culture, and main economic sectors, all in English.

Contenu de la lecon

Political System: A Parliamentary Monarchy

Spain is a parliamentary monarchy. This means it has a king, Felipe VI, who is the head of state, but his role is mostly symbolic and representative. The real political power lies with the democratically elected government.

The country is governed by the Spanish Constitution of 1978, which established democracy and decentralized power. Spain is divided into 17 Autonomous Communities (like Catalonia or Andalusia) and 2 Autonomous Cities (Ceuta and Melilla). Each has its own regional government with varying degrees of self-rule.

Exemple : The Spanish Parliament, called Las Cortes Generales, is bicameral. It consists of the Congress of Deputies (Congreso de los Diputados) and the Senate (Senado).

Culture: A Vibrant Tapestry

Spanish culture is known worldwide for its passion, diversity, and artistic heritage. It varies greatly from region to region, reflecting the country's complex history.

Key cultural elements include flamenco (music and dance from Andalusia), famous painters like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, and architecture ranging from Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to historic monuments. Spanish is the official language, but co-official languages like Catalan, Basque, and Galician are spoken in their respective regions.

Exemple : La Tomatina, a festival in Buñol where people throw tomatoes at each other, and the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona are examples of unique Spanish traditions.

Economy: Modern Sectors and Challenges

Spain has the fourth-largest economy in the Eurozone. Its economy has modernized significantly since joining the European Union in 1986.

Tourism is a vital sector. Spain is one of the world's top tourist destinations, thanks to its climate, beaches, cultural sites, and cuisine. Other important sectors include automotive manufacturing, agriculture (fruits, vegetables, wine), and renewable energy, where Spain is a leader.

Exemple : Companies like Zara (fashion, part of Inditex) and Banco Santander (banking) are Spanish multinational corporations known globally.
